Visit to Royal High School Edinburgh and SCEN Youth Summit 2018
In early November, four F.5 students, Annie Hui, Carrie Wong, Thomas Lee and Edmond Yeung, accompanied by Mr. Edwin Lam (Chairperson of the English Language Department), went on an exchange tour to Edinburgh, Scotland. During the trip, the students were arranged to stay with their host families and had the chance to have lessons with their Scottish buddies. Thus, this gave them an opportunity to have a real taste and in-depth understanding of the life of a Scottish student and the culture there.
Mr. Lam, the chaperone teacher, had professional discussions with a number of curriculum leaders and the vice-principals of Royal High School (RHS), in which he had learned some good practices from RHS. He was very impressed in particular by the school’s tracking system which could give teachers a quick but comprehensive reference of their students. Through the system, teachers could be fairly well-informed of each individual student’s background, ranging from socio-economic status of their family, literacy and numeracy levels, academic reports to special education needs and related actions and intervention strategies taken by the learning support team.
The highlights of the trip were the training workshop held at Lloyds Bank and the SCEN Youth Summit. At Lloyds Bank, the students were asked to do tasks in groups and they were challenged to think innovatively and work collaboratively to suit the needs of their clients. At SCEN Youth Summit, the students had the chance to give a presentation in front of the guest of honour - Lord Wilson, the former governor of Hong Kong, and more than three hundred students from Hong Kong as well as their counterparts from around Scotland.
As the trip was an eye-opening and inspiring experience for the students and the teacher concerned, they all felt extremely privileged to be given such an amazing opportunity in cultural exchange.
